Imangi Studios Says New Environments, Characters, Objectives and Power-ups to Come to Temple Run

by Quentyn Kennemer on March 30th, 2012 at 9:58 am

Since its launch on Android (literally only a few days ago) Temple Run has enjoyed tremendous success on the Google Play Store. With somewhere between one million and five million downloads, I’m better they could be happier with the way things turned out.

The buck doesn’t stop here, of course. PocketGamer had a quick chat with Imangi Studios regarding the hit game, and one interesting tidbit to come out of the interview was regarding new content.

TurboTax Giving Free State and Federal Filing on Android App; This Weekend Only, Tablet Owners Only

TurboTax for Android is out, if you haven’t heard, and they’re trying to promote it by offering a sweet offer to those filing this year’s taxes. You can file both your state and federal taxes completely free if you use the TurboTax app to do it this weekend. The obligatory caveat? Sure – you have to have an Android 3.2

Sony Targets Mid-April for First Xperia ICS Updates

Sony’s bringing the sweet taste of Ice Cream Sandwich to all their 2011 phones, and it seems we’ll have to wait just a tad longer. It’s only a two week wait (give or take a few days) because they’ve now pegged mid-April for the first set of rollouts. Of course, we imagine the unlocked and unbranded versions will get the upgrades right away, but carrier-specific versions will depend on each specific carrier.

Most European and Canadian carriers tend to get the update out rather quickly, while it may be a more tough wait here in the United States. The roll-out period will stretch 4-6 weeks so if you have an eligible handset and you don’t get the update right away, be cool and be patient – it’ll get there eventually. Hit the source links to see which devices are included.

Verizon DROID Incredible 4G Enters the MAP Process

We’ve long heard rumors of one HTC Droid Incredible 4G ready to make its way to store shelves, but outsides mere mention of the device’s name we’re not exactly sure what to expect. We’re expecting a variant of the HTC One X with LTE, of course, but anything could be the case. The device has just been subjected to MAP (minimum advertised price) which usually means Verizon is getting close to figuring out an advertising campaign (and, by association, that the device is nearly finished and ready for mass production).

ZTE Fury Review

While most Android diehards would scoff at a device like the ZTE Fury, the Sprint handset offers proof that a quality Android experience can be delivered alongside affordable pricing. Launching for only $20 on contract, the Fury could be mistaken for something (slightly) pricier. A surprisingly good 5MP camera, snappy Qualcomm CPU, and Sprint ID features give the entry-level handset plenty to offer. Coupled with a solid design, the Fury has some potential within its compact frame. Does it put other budget models to shame? Read on for the full review.

Hardware

The ZTE Fury offers a compact design with just enough fine touches to allude to something outside of its price range. A textured, soft-touch back, chrome accents, and rounded edges give off a certain sense of class. It isn’t the thinnest device ever, but it still manages to come in at less than half an inch. The phone sports a 3.5-inch IPS LCD display at 320×480 resolution.

Inside the Fury lies a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, and 4GB of on board storage. It’s some impressive power for such a squarely mid-range phone and the benefits can be felt when navigating throughout the phone’s software. A basically stock build of Android 2.3 helps in this department. The Snapdragon CPU is appreciated when it comes to flicking between homescreens, rendering and navigating webpages, and playing back video. The phone never seems to struggle or lag behind all that much.

New HTC ad shows their latest phone as the only One for you

by Kevin Krause on March 30th, 2012 at 2:38 pm

HTC is taking their One series and running with it. At the unveiling event at Mobile World Congress we were given a good idea of how the name would tie into marketing, emphasizing the new phone as the only “one” designed to meet the desires of individual users. In another way, HTC wants folks to walk into stores and say “that’s the one I’ve been looking for.” Get it? It’s kind of cute. Kind of clever.

The One branding concept is extended in the latest ad from HTC, showing all sorts of folks taking full advantage of the improved hardware and software found in the One X, One S, and One V. Want another idea of just how the pairing makes for one heck of an experience? Check out this head-to-head camera battle between the One X, Galaxy Nexus, and Xperia S.

ICS Public Beta for the MEIZU MX or M9 now live

Rock the Meizu MX or the M9? Then we got good news for you, people, the public beta for the ICS firmware is now a go, after a little over a month of private testing. You can get more info from the press release attached at the bottom of the post.

It’s really good to see news pouring through of Ice Cream Sandwich updates rolling out for another device at a more regular rate now. Needless it say most of us have been disappointed with the pace up until now. Heck, not even all the Nexus S users are on ICS yet.

MEIZU releases stock Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich firmware for MX and M9

HONG KONG - March 30, 2012 - MEIZU has today released a public beta testing version of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the MEIZU MX and M9. The newly released firmware will be based on stock Android 4.0 without any customizations.

The Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade brings an entirely new look and feel to Android on MEIZU MX and M9, with a redesigned user interface as well as new design and usage concepts.

Prior to the public beta testing, MEIZU launched a private beta testing program for Android 4.0, which began mid-February for the MEIZU M9. During the private beta, users were amazed at the speed and responsiveness of the testing firmware. The newly released public beta firmware brings many bug fixes and also the support for MEIZU’s flagship device, the MX.

With the release of the public beta testing stock Android firmware, the company continues supporting the MEIZU M9, a device that has been on the market for more than a year. By doing so, MEIZU once again displays its focused commitment to the user experience and satisfaction of its many customers and fans.

The ICS beta firmware is available as of today for the MEIZU MX and M9.

Google releases Translator Toolkit for developers looking to localize apps

Want to translate your app into as many languages as possible? You may want to check out the Google Translator Toolkit, which provides auto-translation of strings stored in your resource files.

Now, we know Google Translate often provides some hilarious responses, and the limitation to translate your stored list of resource strings means a more limited implementation, but I can imagine a lot of developers who may find it useful.

Case in point is an app I’ll be releasing very soon myself, which aims to assist users in boosting their vocabulary. Those who don’t have English as their first language may find it useful to have the meanings provided in their mother tongues.

Anyhoo, here’s the announcement made on the Android Developers’ official Google

doubleTwist releases a gorgeous alarm clock app that will make you hate your favorite songs

There are quite a few alarm clock apps around on Google Play that let you set songs or playlists to wake you up to, but I’ve got to say: none of them are going to be nearly as gorgeous as doubleTwist’s. They have also thrown in a sleep cycle mode, so you wake up fresh (how they know when exactly you fall asleep is beyond me).

In my eyes, the killer feature are the clock-faces. I love analog clocks, and I really dig doubleTwist’s offerings. But, reading the user comments that have poured in, I’ve noticed that it can also potentially drain your battery, taking up nearly 20 MB RAM.

If that’s OK with you, head over to Google Play as soon as possible, because the first 10,000 downloads can get it for $1 (after that, the price doubles). Also, if you buy the app then tweet about it and/or like doubleTwist on Facebook, within roughly the next 80 hours, you can get this wall clock that costs $1100.

T-Mobile apologizes for inadvertently sending out notification bar ads

I’ve mentioned my hatred for ads pushed to notification bars before. They’re downright intrusive, and I’ll uninstall any app that does it, no matter how good it is.

Unfortunately, you don’t quite get that kind of option with your carrier, so I really hope all of them learn from T-Mobile’s little error. The carrier sent out notifications to users regarding their free VIP zone, mistakenly by the sound of their response. As expected, the user complaints flew in, and the issue was resolved.

In a mail to TmoNews, they said:

‘During a recent software update, a message to promote T-Mobile’s free VIP Zone was mistakenly sent to certain customers and appeared on the notification bar for some Android devices. After T-Mobile was made aware of this mistake, the company stopped the notifications. T-Mobile apologizes for the inconvenience this may have caused customers.’

CM9 Nightly Builds for Galaxy S i9000/i9000B now available

There was an understandable hue and cry when Samsung announced that the original Galaxy S would not receive an Ice Cream Sandwich update. Manufacturers’ love for their custom UIs had won again, and all that Samsung promised to calm down the mob was a ‘value pack’.

But, as we all knew, the developer community wouldn’t let such a popular phone die an early death. There are a few ROMs on XDA already, and users can also now get a taste of CM9 with their nightly builds.

Do remember this is for the international (and the Brazilian) version only. The builds for the various US versions shouldn’t be that far off, though.

Droid Razr, Razr Maxx and HTC Rezound users to taste ICS next week?

Well, look at what we have here. Some naughty fella decided to leak the above document, belonging to Best Buy, which states that the Droid Razr and the Razr Maxx should get an OTA update to Android 4.0 on April 4. HTC Rezound users aren’t left too far behind, with OTAs scheduled to be pushed out 2 days later on April 6.

Flurry claims Amazon App Store provides 3X revenue compared to Google Play

Mobile app analytics company Flurry has just released a report, studying per-user revenues generated by various apps that use their services across the Amazon App Store, Google Play and the Apple App Store. While it isn’t much of a surprise that Apple’s App Store leads the way, what really is worth noting is that the Amazon App Store is not only ahead of Google Play, but is smoking it.

The revenue model used for the study was solely in-app purchases, so the data provided here doesn’t apply to paid or ad-supported apps (the latter of which are an overwhelming majority in Google Play).

The simple reasoning for such a result is, in my eyes, the fact that Google Play has a ton of users who just don’t pay for apps. In-app purchases are primarily implemented by those developers using a freemium model, and hence a significant number of users download the app, but never make an in-app purchase. This ends up diluting the "per-user revenue" that is used in Flurry’s study. Additionally, on a gross revenue scale, I guess it’s safe to Google Play’s returns should be in the vicinity, if not more, of the Amazon App Store.

As such we can’t really come to a conclusion for every model, but I think it would be safe to say that the Amazon App Store should certainly be on the thoughts of all developers.  If there’s any developer reading this, who’s got his/her app on both Google Play and Amazon App Store, could you please share with us your experiences in the comments?

Amazon App Store updated to v2.3.0 - 3G/4G download limit increased, notification bugs addressed

17 CommentsPosted by pimframMarch 29, 2012 - 22:111 day ago

About time the up the limits for 4G. Hell, LTE is quite a bit faster than my home connection, it's stupid to have to use that, especially since I have unlimited.

i know, it always drives me crazy when i have to be on wifi to download an app. especially on the bus.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by hmmmMarch 30, 2012 - 09:361 day ago

Even 3G. I will download large files (ROMS or Games) while I am working so I don't care if I am only getting 800kbps.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by demontoothMarch 29, 2012 - 22:121 day ago

I can't figure out why it keeps telling me I have new apps to download when I don't. It doesn't make sense.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by djs71aMarch 29, 2012 - 22:571 day ago

Could it be that you installed an app then later uninstalled it? I have done so and see those apps listed in the Amazon Appstore in my new apps list. I assume that is the notifications I sometimes get like you.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by crazed_z06March 30, 2012 - 00:321 day ago

Yea, Ive had that problem forever and it's extra annoying. Did this update fix it for you?

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by cajunaggie87March 30, 2012 - 10:221 day ago

The same thing happens to me. It happens when you uninstall an app and an update comes out for that app, but since you don't have it installed, it just says "Hey you need to install this" and not "Hey you need to update this." It's kind of annoying. I hope that's one of the bugs they fixed.

Amazon Appstore drains the most battery on my device. Even when i dont open the application. Its ridiculous.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by paulmike3March 30, 2012 - 00:061 day ago

Same here. It also runs like absolute poo. I use it for about 30 seconds a day for FAotD, then forget about it. It's really a piece of trash that needs a bottom to top overhaul.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by icuMarch 30, 2012 - 00:141 day ago

Free app of the day was cool for a while, but not so much lately. It's a constant source of bugs and annoyances and I'm just about ready to dump it (free apps and all).

There are, however a few apps I bought on there (I know ...), but I can't use them if the appstore isn't installed ... wish there was a way around this.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by vicw926a4March 30, 2012 - 00:301 day ago

What I find really frustrating is when it wants to update an app that I got via Google, or a purchased app and I can't remember which store I purchased it from. I'm always worried about what will happen if I cross them over.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by crazed_z06March 30, 2012 - 00:351 day ago

It's done that to me a few times. It's doing that right now for me with Angry Birds Space. I got it from the Play store, but it says an update is available on the Amazon store.

Ive had apps "cross streams" before and it gave me an error in the play store. I had to manually uninstall the app and then go back and re-install it.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by icuMarch 30, 2012 - 10:461 day ago

Luckily you can go into your Amazon account (via the webpage) go to your "Digital Content" irrc and delete any app from your Amazon account. Had to do this when I bought SwiftKey from the "Play Store"(what am I 12?) because I wanted timely updates.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by Mikey47March 30, 2012 - 02:041 day ago

The free apps have sacked for quite some time. I don't know how long it's been since I saw one that I wanted.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by crxssiMarch 30, 2012 - 08:051 day ago

Yet another frustration from Amazon Store is that you can't tell WHAT CHANGED when an app is updated.

I actually had to find the same app on Android Market just to look up a change log to see what was new with an app.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by nwavesMarch 30, 2012 - 08:531 day ago

Amazon market sucks badly. I bought several apps from them and that's the only reason i still keep it running. It drains the battery a good amount, apps rarely update and when they do update you don't know what changed. I bought Juice Defender Ultimate from them and JD is at the 3.8.3 version from June 2011, while Google play has 3.9.4 version since February 2012. Fortunately, I was able to update JD from Google play and leave JDU (the license part) at the old version but now Amazon market keeps asking me to update JD to the OLD version. I wish I would have never purchased anything through them.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by hmmmMarch 30, 2012 - 09:411 day ago

Best thing about the Amazon store for me is that my wife and I have one Amazon account so we can share apps pretty easily and the FAotD has been a gem a few times (Printershare for one). It isn't so easy to share a gmail account unless you happened to set up a dummy account before you buy your first paid app. It makes most sense for me to buy my apps from there rather than the Android market. I am so glad they have disabled those damn notifications. It is the only thing I disliked.

Kids are filthy minded by 14 these days. Anyone younger probably has no reason to be here.

This isn't exactly PBSkids.org...

I agree...'kid safe' is a friggin' joke. Youngsters get whatever they're after these days...and are usually belittled for any percieved lack of exposure to sex by their peer group.
Whoever was so worried about the porn app ( the ad for it) must be so terribly ignorant of reality.

Trying to make the internet "kid safe" is a hopeless task, it's up to parents to safeguard their children, not the rest of us.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by MannyBMarch 30, 2012 - 11:041 day ago

Have to agree. If a kid is on the Internet, a parent should be watching them. It's way to easy to get to stuff that is much more damaging than an innocuous mention of a porn app. How about some of those violent flash games out there? If you don't want your child to see certain things on the Internet, you must sit with them 100% of the time that they are using the Internet. No need to censor it from adults who have a right to see it.

Wait, what? "If porn offends you, don't use the internet." I love that bit. I know there are not many, but some web sites don't have any porn on them...not many. And as far as AC, they DO NOT report EVERYTHING Android. There are hundreds of apps that get no front page story at all. I get that, in this world, sex sells, but when I jump on the net, lol, it is not for porn. Porn offends me, still gonna use my interwebs...

cloud has limits. Cloud blows when you're on a flight or there's no (or inadequate) 4g coverage. Cloud shortens battery life.
Internal storage is a good backup

Not for me, or a lot of people. I have a 32GB microSD in my Droid Incredible alongside the internal 8GB (40GB total) and it's still nowhere near enough. I have over 70GB of music, and as much again of video. The video I can live without on my phone, but still that leaves me with 30

Ditto Sprint & Google. Pretty sad when a Nexus phone takes six months to update...without even a hint at what MONTH we will get it. I know, I know...Google updates the Nexus line. But Sprint still has to approve and update for their radios and their network.

I don't claim to be an expert, but when I bought my Rezound, it was publicized that it would receive ICS 1st quarter. So I have to assume that 4 months later they would have at least an idea when ICS will be reaching my phone.

So if the 8.9LTE on Bell get is in June then the Wifi only generic unit should be getting it in April i would guess. I hope so, we really need a speed boost.

HTC 'Droid Incredible 4G' appears in Verizon internal screen

The "Droid Incredible 4G" name has appeared a couple of times over the past few months, suggesting the imminent arrival of a new entry in HTC and Big Red's Droid Incredible series. Back in February we even got our first look at what seems to be a Droid Incredible-like device with Verizon 4G LTE connectivity.

Today there's even more evidence to suggest that a new Dinc may be on the way. A Verizon internal document sent to us by a tipster references the HTC Droid Incredible 4G and its model number, ADR6410. There's also some slightly less interesting stuff about MAP (minimum advertised price) policy, though no specific prices to speak of at this stage.

With the HTC One X and One S coming to Europe in the next week, and a U.S. launch likely within the next month, it makes sense for Verizon to get its own next-gen HTC handset in the near future. Purported specs include a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU, 1GB of RAM and an 8MP shooter. Like the One S, the display is said to be AMOLED-based rather than One X's SLCD2. On the software side, we'd expect to see Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0.

Sounds a lot like a 4G LTE version of the One S to us. Verizon people, be sure to drop by the comments and let us know if you're tempted.

Thanks, Anon!

HTC takes to the skies for new ad campaign

HTC STAGES WORLD FIRST FREE FALL FASHION SHOOT ON A MOBILE HANDSET TO LAUNCH NEW ‘AS RECOMMENDED BY’ BRAND STRATEGY HTC, a leading global designer of smartphones, is set to launch its new integrated marketing strategy ‘As Recommended By’ that sees the power placed firmly in the hands of real users. At the centre of this strategy is the decision that from now HTC will only ever advertise real people using HTC handsets in real-world product demonstrations – leveraging the insight that positive personal experiences power personal recommendations. This strategy will also play out through the line across digital, social media, PR and retail. To kick off the new strategic direction HTC has put two consumers and their personal experiences at the heart of its’ latest TV commercial.  For the new campaign creative, HTC challenged two amateur photographers to capture the world’s first free fall fashion shoot on a mobile phone. Created to launch the new HTC One™ series, the global campaign will run in over 40 markets and features Nick Jojola and Tony Mac, HTC fans  who have a keen interest in photography. Having never shot any commercial photography before or sky dived, they were challenged to capture high production fashion imagery on the HTC One handsets whilst freefalling at 126mph. This unique campaign delivered them both an unforgettable personal experience but also created an amazing real-world product demonstration. The campaign which launches in the UK on 4th of April was devised and created by global advertising agency Mother in partnership with HTC. Filmed on location in Arizona, director Sara Dunlop from Rattling Stick Productions put together a team of people including skydiving cinematographer Norman Kent, world champion skydiver and model, Roberta Mancino, LA Times fashion stylist Hayley Atkins and Hollywood Costume Designer Martin Izquierdo to deliver this complex and demanding advertising creative. Shot at dusk and dawn this creative is designed to bring to life the simultaneous video and photo capture functionality and instant capture capabilities of the new HTC One handsets. Both the HTC One™ X and HTC One™ S challenge traditional digital compact cameras by delivering a range of features including high quality images even in low light conditions, instant image capture, auto focus, burst mode and backlight HDR technology and the ability to take stills from already shot HD video footage that operate effectively in both normal and adverse conditions. Greg Fisher, Vice President of Marketing at HTC, comments “In a world where consumers have more say and more means to share their opinion than ever, personal recommendations are one of the most important factors in purchase decisions. As a brand that has also put the consumer at the heart of its innovation, we wanted to give consumers the chance to make their own minds up about HTC and so enabled them to harness the power of personal experiences with the aim of turning them into personal and authentic recommendations.” The ‘As Recommended By’ strategy aims to capture and share recommendations to tell the HTC story which will be played out across all HTC communications. Product trial and previews will be a key component to drive and collect these recommendations with consumers in over 40 markets being invited to take part. Over 1,000 handsets will be delivered to HTC fans, consumers and influencers for real-life trials ahead of retail launch. This will be activated through digital and PR with participants invited to share their experiences through social media, PR and word of mouth. This builds on HTC’s existing social media activity with HTC fans invited to local market ‘meet ups’ to get hands on time with the new product early. At retail the ‘As Recommended By’ strategy will be brought to life via retail staff and consumer recommendations. Shoppers will be prompted to experience the HTC One Series for themselves and their recommendations will be captured to show other consumers and drive consideration for purchase. The creative utilised across retail will place the emphasis on ‘you?’ which has been created to provide a clear invitation for consumers and retail staff to experience the product themselves. Greg Fisher continues “We believe this is one of the most transparent campaigns in history, as we are set to embrace our consumer’s first –hand experiences and impressions of our new product and put their recommendations at the forefront of our communications. This ambitious marketing strategy is at the centre of driving HTC’s significant global growth targets in 2012 and beyond. ”

Android tablets running on Nvidia Tegra 3 to hit $200 this summer

20 CommentsPosted by LakersMarch 30, 2012 - 14:5323 hours ago

Yeah but are the tablets going to be worth that 200$ Price tag? I have used several android tablets over the past few months and don't find any of them to be all that spectacular and worth their much higher price tag. As much as I want to see Android take down Apple and their sheep, the stuff I have been testing lately doesn't. And before you say we can't compare apples to oranges, its all competition so it must be compared. Even if the price tag is lower, MOST individuals, including myself, want something that is going to last and work well with no issues.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by PoteluzMarch 30, 2012 - 15:3323 hours ago

What exactly do you mean the stuff you've been testing doesn't? What don't the top of the line tablets not do that the ipad does do???? Android tablets are better in every way and cost less than the ipads

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by jrod986March 30, 2012 - 16:0722 hours ago

Well there's one thing almost everyone can agree on that the iPad stomps Android tablets on, app developer support, especially on the game side of things. For people who considers tablets as toys and not their main computing device, it's still hard to beat an iPad.

Plus you know, its RESOLUTIONARY

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by DavestMarch 30, 2012 - 17:1621 hours ago

Wow...spoken like a true fanboi. While I agree that Android is the way to go, and I have no plans to purchase an iPad, comments like yours are just silly. The simplest contradiction to your statement is the screen resolution. Not important to me, but when dealing with absolutes it's really easy to be proven wrong. And which of the high-end (read - Tegra 3) tablets are cheaper than an iPad?

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by BishounenMarch 30, 2012 - 15:1423 hours ago

honestly, at $199 is the point when I buy. Especially if they are similarly specced to the nook tablet or the fire abd with similar build quality AND have ICS installed. The biggest isue with current android tabs is the version of the os and the exorbitant cost.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by icebikeMarch 30, 2012 - 15:1523 hours ago

Tablets end up on every couch, and newer lightweight laptops end up doing the real work.

A great number of people will never need anything other than a good cheep 10 inch tablet at home for web, email, books, movies and games.

So yeah, sub $200 dollar wifi only tablets will sell zillions. With cloud storage, who really cares how long it lasts?

At that price, its a commodity.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by Mtn_ScottMarch 30, 2012 - 18:4119 hours ago

Real work gets done on a desktop. Casual work, gets done on laptops. Media consumption is for tablets.

Some tabs work for note taking but true creation of tablets is inefficient at best.

I would rather they keep the higher price and higher quality. This kind of decision can lead to failing devices, and look poorly on the android community.

So decent tablets will go for 50 gallons of gas or less?

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by xolanirMarch 30, 2012 - 16:1822 hours ago

I believe this is a step in the right direction for these manufacturers. If you lower the price tag and still off legit specs, people will be more willing to purchase a tablet. The reason the KF was adopted in the way it was, was due to the price tag 1st and then people made the specs work for what they personally bought it for. I currently own a KF, other than the low built in internal memory, I digg it! I do a lot of reading, web surfing, game playing and watch movies/tv shows on the fly, and that suites my needs perfectly. So if Android wants to compete with the iPad, all the manufacturers will need to figure out a way to lower their high prices while still offering great specs. NVIDIA is leading the change hopefully in a positive direction.

All I'm saying is bring down the price of Android tablets by $100 and keep the build quality and extras (sdcard slot, USB, HBMI) I REALLY want an Android tab but I cannot see spending $500 for one. The Transformer Prime is a GREAT tablet but it's made by Asus (a company known for lower pricetags) so I see no reason why they can't sell this amazing Android tab for $399 instead for $500

Probably because there is the potential to sell you more music once you get your collection into Google music.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by ThirtysixwayMarch 30, 2012 - 18:4319 hours ago

Well think about music, it's pretty static. If 100 people have the same 3MB song, Google can simply store one 3MB file instead of one-hundred 3MB files. At least I'd assume that's how they run it. So your '120GB' isn't actually taking up a unique 120GB on Google servers.

Personal files.. I mean you can do compression and some of them may be similar to do de-duplication, but you're looking at a lot more unique data with Google Drive than you would with Google Music.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by icebikeMarch 30, 2012 - 21:3117 hours ago

Its called file de-duplication, and Google has pretty much admitted that it does work that way in a couple interviews I read months ago.

I have some older MP3s that were made from slightly scratched records, and now the version that plays thru Google Music is better than the version stored on my computer. You won't notice it immediately after an upload, but over time (days), all your popular or current songs will end up being higher quality than the ones you uploaded.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by msmilanovMarch 31, 2012 - 07:017 hours ago

The more unique thing about this is that if you upload song which is 192kbps when you download your song/s they'll be 320kpps. All of them.

New malware appearing in dodgy apps you shouldn't be downloading anyway

The next time you're cruising one of the various Android app piracy forums looking for the free crack for ROM Manager or Root Explorer, be warned that you may get more than you're looking for. A new bit of malware named DKFBootkit has been found attached to pirated apps that require root. It hooks itself into the boot sequence by altering files in the system, and can cause all sorts of problems without the user being aware. Since you think it's a legit application, you say OK when it asks for root privileges, and you are owned. It's bad news all around.

The good news is that it's easy as hell to avoid. That's the part of these types of stories that never seems to get mentioned. Use a bit of common sense -- you download a file from someone who is able to crack a legit app and defeat any license checks, and you don't think they can drop a bot or keylogger in there as well? Idiocy like this is what keeps malware alive on Windows desktops, and Android devices. Stop stealing apps, and don't be stupid enough to trust someone who steals and redistributes them. Period. Full stop.

If you didn't pay for it, chances are you'll wish you did. And you deserve it.

Never sell your MicroSD card with the phone. Let the new user buy their own.

Of the apps linked to above only ShredDroid claims to overwrite system storage, and reviews seem mixed as to whether it does that at all. The rest only address the MicroSD.

For internal storage, simply wipe the phone then side load it FULL of innocuous photos, then wipe it again.

That will overwrite every user writable portion, and any recovery only gets landscapes of your vacation. And, NO, there is no need to overwrite storage many times like some of these apps seem to think. That hasn't been necessary since the demise of magnetic tape.

Your settings might still be erased (but not gone) from system storage.

Like Jerry says, the people who can get at that data are few and far between. But where are your email passwords stored? Might not hurt to change those when selling the phone.

Phones replaced by carriers are at special risk here, because sometimes its non-functional when turned in, and you can't wipe it. More than one of these has been shipped with data intact as a refurb.

Erasing a Flash drive or SSD is not the same as erasing magnetic media such as a standard hard drive. Using a standard wipe utility may not, in fact, eliminate all your data due to the differences in how the flash drives maintain the data.

Recommending any wipe utility without doing thorough testing on them seems a bit irresponsible. Encryption and physical destruction is probably the best answer for the moment.

Or you could just use any number of Windows/Ubuntu/Mac programs that wipe hard drives, SD cards, thumb drives, or whatever else you need. Mac's own Disk Utility has this capability. For Windows I've found this: http://www.partitionwizard.com/ to be a PERFECT tool for reformatting/wiping memory cards. It even has options for erasing/rewriting that are supposedly comparable to military standards. I've used it to repartition my SD card for true apps to SD capability because my Samsung Moment only has 200 some-odd MB of internal storage.
As for erasing data on system folders, a complete wipe via recovery (custom or stock) should do the trick.

The author is not a linux user? They system partition works like any other linux filesystem. Linux is better at data recovery than any other OS. Remount the system and you can recover any data.

Select ratingSpamThumbs DownThumbs Up  Login or register to post comments Posted by cowbuttMarch 31, 2012 - 02:1712 hours ago

The /system partition is normally mounted read-only, so there should never be any user data there, unless they've rooted and put it there manually.

/data and /cache, on the other hand, may (indeed, probably) hold user data, but those are wiped when doing a factory reset (either from within Android or recovery). I'm not sure whether those options just erase the superblock and rewrite it, or whether they actually fill those partitions with junk data first.

Any recovery tool that an attacker will have to use to attempt to recover data from those partitions will need to run natively on Android, though, or they're going to have to desolder the flash, which should mitigate things somewhat.

"The same thing applies for your Windows computer. If you're using FAT (the default prior to Windows 7 and still in use by some OEMs)"

Windows XP would be more accurate, at least as a business AND consumer (home) operating system. Prior to that it would be Windows 2000, or going back further Windows NT, which were both business oriented operating systems that use NTFS as the default file system, not FAT. You have to go way back to the DOS based Windows ME/98/95 to find FAT/FAT32 as the default file system. :)
