HTC: Unlocked Bootloaders for EVO 3D, Sensation Expected by September

HTC has taken to Facebook to announce that they have taken one step closer to unlocking the bootloaders for their new Sensation 4G (T-Mobile) and EVO 3D (Sprint).  According to the handset maker, they are currently in the process of testing the system out, hoping to have it ready for September.

We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We’ll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.

The issue of bootloaders may not matter to many Android users, but it's really important to those that care.  We'll be really happy once HTC gets out in front of the situation and starts to show other device makers how much good will is behind such a move.  It certainly won't hurt their growth!

HTC rules! I was hoping due to the fact im a rom flash addict it could be done sooner, but i do understand that from htc side of it this is prolly easier said than done. I think the way they have handled it and the speed in which they responded to this matter giving us progress reports on it are first class. Well done htc. Ive still got that comment ringing in my head from moto saying if you dont like it dont buy it.

HTC Desire Gingerbread Update Passes Testing, Due by End of July

HTC recently made an announcement that Desire would not be getting an update to Android 2.3, due to its lack of sufficient memory. But after some deliberation (and negative response from Desire users), they decided to launch Gingerbread, minus a few apps to help with the memory issues.

We heard a few days ago that HTC had begun testing the update for Desire. Well, HTC has made another announcement via their Facebook page, stating that they are done with testing, and the Desire will officially receive some 2.3 love by the end of July. We'll let you know when we get our hands on an official date.

So, Gingerbread is really coming, but how well do you think it will perform on your Desire? Who's excited about the update?? Share your thoughts in the comment below, or on our Facebook Wall!

CM7 Being Worked on for G2X

The word from the Cyanogenmod team is that CM7 is in active development right now, but the fact being that they have had the device for three days, there is a lot to be worked on before it is ready for public consumption.

Excitement about CM coming to the G2X was stoked when Cyanogen tweeted out a pic of his G2X running "bro-tips", and further pushed with Chris Soyars tweeted out the image pictured to the left.

When asked for a quote, CM Team Member Arcee gave:

Major functionality is done, device-specific things are being worked on. Part of the differences between the G2x and the O2x come from the kernel, and LGE hasn't released the source for the G2x yet, so we're on hold until then"

Props need to go to Arcee, who is the lead dev for the Optimus 2X, which is the Euro version of the G2X.  Arcee did a lot of groundwork before the release of the G2X using the Optimus 2X as a starting point.  His work has made the current rapid timeline for the G2X possible.
DISCLAIMER:  The Team wants you to be excited about the work that is happening on this new device, but tweeting them like fools asking for ETA's or updates is only going to slow things down.  Be encouraged by the fact that they have only had the device for three days, and have already made some progress forward.  More info on this as it develops.

More Rumblings About an Amazon Android Tablet

By now, if you have been reading the tea leaves about the advances that Amazon has made in the Android ecosystem, you should be under the assumption that Amazon is working on an Android powered tablet.  It seems it is the industry worst kept secret, or rather, most talked about secret anyway. With the new Android app store, plus the streaming music and media for Android Amazon has launched, it makes sense that their next step is going to be to release an Android device of some sort like the Nook.

On Engadget today, there is an interesting article talking about some things Engadget Founder, Peter Rojas, is saying about the "secret" project:

It's something of an open secret that Amazon is working on an Android tablet and I am 99 percent certain they are having Samsung build one for them.

An Amazon tablet, built by Samsung, running Android inside Amazon as a platform? Could this be the reason that Apple has finally decided to sue Samsung? No answers but conjecture for sure right now, but it certainly plausible. Why? Because it makes a lot of sense that this new Android device from Amazon could really give Apple a run for it's money, literally.

It will be interesting to see what finally comes out of this, we should be looking forward to the prospect of a less expensive Android device that will have a lot of capability. What do you think?

Two More Images of CM7 on the G2X

Pictured to the left are pics of CM7 running on the G2X, courtesy of Chris Soyars.  Again, this is still very much a work in progress, but we figured you would want to see some more good news if you are the owner of a G2X.http://twitter.com/jokeyrhymeRon

This little dual-core wonder from LG is currently the highest ranked Tegra2 handset on http://unrevoked.com/...ki/doku.php/public/root_friendly

The only things this baby lacks is AMOLED (not a deal-breaker), NFC (would have been nice), qHD (why should iOS have all the fun?) and 3G 850MHz (therefore no 3G in 95% of Australia). As soon as the "other GSM" version drops I'll probably pick one up assuming nothing else ticks all the boxes.

Android Being Tested By U.S. Army For Future Combat Use

Courtesy of http://www.army.milThe U.S. Army is ready to put the power of the mobile device into the hands of it's soldiers and in a nod to open architecture, they have chosen to develop a prototype device that runs on the Android operating system. Before being deployed to the field, the Joint Battle Command-Platform Handset (JBC-P) handsets must pass through a series of 4 test events scheduled to finish up in late 2012.  Rest assured when the testing concludes, the Army will have better hardware choices and a faster, more efficient version of Android (Lollipop?)

Currently, JBC-P apps are focused on maintaining real-time situational awareness. They enable soldiers to track fellow soldiers (also known as a blue force tracker), the enemy, and anything else they can notate from their device (roadside bomb, obstacles, friendly villages, uncharted streets, etc). An invaluable capability that has the potential for saving lives.

What sort of apps will the JBC-P handsets (and future handsets) be running? That's up to developers. The Army plans to release a mobile handheld development kit sometime in July 2011. Because of security concerns, our guess is that the development  kit will only be released to cleared defense contractors, but that remains to be seen.

What sort of apps do you envision the Army running? What benefits might Android 'civilians' see now that Android has made its way into the Defense realm? We'd like to hear your thoughts in the comments below.

Mary Beth

This seems surprising given that these devices would be so dependent on a good wireless network.

http://www.facebook.com/people/Marco-Ruiz/741463237Marco Ruiz

This is great. It makes sense to take an open mobile platform like Android and apply it to producing something our armed forces, or anybody else, can use for more specific purposes. Bomb detection, live translation, mapping, and who knows what else would very much help them out. I like the direction android is heading. Sooner or later it will be ubiquitous, and yet we will have so many options lol.

Jake

I could see it being used in conjunction to sat phone technology instead of standard cell systems

Intel to Launch Honeycomb Powered Tablets Soon

Intel is the leading chip maker in the world, and they are always the first choice of a PC gamer or any other person who is looking forward to buy a new processor. While they have been a top name for PCs and laptops, they essentially have no presence in mobile.  Now, however,  it looks like they are about to give their full attention to Android tablets. According to CEO of Intel Paul S. Otellini, Intel has received Android Honeycomb code from Google and now they are working to port it to the x86 architecture. This means that in near future, we will see an Android Honeycomb tablet running on the Intel Oak Trail processor.

Intel processors are less power consuming which means more battery and fun. There are number of Intel laptops available in the market (I am using one right now), and the reason people go for Intel is that it eats less resources as compared to other chips. I am sure if a company launches Intel Oak Trail based tablet, then it will offer a great battery life, which is a big sticking point for us Android users. Anyone out there looking forward to Intel-based tablets?

Source: The Register

http://twitter.com/mazimiMohammad Azimi

I'm just as excited about Intel chips in Android devices as the next guy but this article is a JOKE.

"Intel processors are less power consuming which means more battery and fun."
Take some time to provide your readers with details and actual numbers. I'm assuming since your article is about tablets you are comparing the Oak Trail processor to ARM based CPUs. The Atom Z670 has a TDP of 3 Watts whereas the A5 ARM CPU in the iPad 2 has a TDP around 0.5 Watts.

"the reason people go for Intel is that it eats less resources as compared to other chips"
Eats less resources? So the Atom CPU uses less system resources, i.e. CPU (itself), memory, etc as an ARM processor? Sorry, I don't follow.

Rugged Casio Commando Leaked with Image and Specs

There are a lot of rugged phones available in market but when it comes to Android, there is only one phone you can call beautiful and rugged, and it's known as the Motorola Defy. Now it looks like the Defy is not alone when it comes to rugged Android phones. Say hello to the  Casio G'zOne Commando, from Verizon Wireless. We first heard about this phone a few days ago in a leaked Vzw Spring roadmap. If you have a tough job, like working in an oil refinery or a construction company, then you need a phone which is reliable and strong enough to face any problem. Casio Commando is not good looking like the Defy but rugged devices are meant for work, not for beauty.

The Commando comes with Android 2.2, a 3.6-inch Gorilla glass display, 800 MHz processor, 512mb of RAM, a MicroSD Slot, and a 5 MP camera. The design of the device verifies that it's made for some serious use, so if you are Bear Grylls fan and love adventures, then this device is the one for you.

So, who's looking forward to buy this upcoming rugged phone from Verizon?

Telstra Wants in on Android, Launching Galaxy S II and XOOM Next Month?

Motorola is currently leading the Honeycomb race, thanks to their Motorola XOOM, and now it looks it's landing in Australia, as Ausdroid is reporting that Telstra will be launching the Motorola XOOM in Australia next month. No word on the price at the moment, but I think the contract price will be similar to the one here in the States. Telstra is one of the leading mobile networks in Australia, which was formally owned by Australian government. Their device line-up is very good, and they are offering a lot of great devices.

They are also planning to launch the Samsung Galaxy S II, which is at the moment one of the most anticipated smartphones. Bluetooth SIG has approved the Samsung Galaxy S II GT-i900T,and it's also showing that the device will be available in Australia. Can you see T in front of the Galaxy S II model number? The T means that the device is headed to Telstra, in Australia. We'll have to wait and see on this one. It's rumored that it's coming out next month, fingers crossed.

So, our Australian readers out there, are you excited about these two new devices that are coming your way?

Correction: Telstra was "formerly" owned by the Australian Government. Slightly different meaning.

Panasonic Chargepad wirelessly juices up mobile chargers, nothing else

We’ve seen plenty of wireless charging solutions that employ inductive power and other technologies to charge devices directly (heck, your next car may even have a Powermat in its console), but Panasonic’s Chargepad may be the first such product to charge, well, other chargers, rather than gadgets themselves. At launch, the Chargepad will only be compatible with two models, the QE-PL101-W and QE-PL201-W, which you can use to juice up cell phones and other USB-compatible devices on the go. We’d love to see the company embedding inductive charging components in its cameras and other devices instead, but if you’re an early adopter who happens to live in Japan, then you can expect to pay between $110-130 (open pricing, depending on battery capacity) for the Chargepad and a mobile charger when these hit stores on June 24.

Update: As reader SegueToNowhere points out, the Chargepad has a Qi logo, meaning it should work with your favorite Qi devices.

Motorola Xoom, Nexus S 4G hitting Sprint in early May?

Sprint service the only thing standing between you and a Motorola Xoom? Good news — a tipster passed along an internal calendar showing an April 25th employee training date for the Honeycomb tablet, and while we’re still taking it with a grain of salt, it seems like the real deal. If past products are any indication, it should hit Sprint stores a fortnight later, in early May, lining up nicely with those Xoom cases that were spotted a week back. The Nexus S 4G also looks to be slotted for employee training the same day, foreshadowing busy times ahead for the Now Network cashiers.

Ongoing PlayStation Network outage could be DDoS attack

The Sony PlayStation Network is currently suffering some downtime, with all Sony Online Network services unavailable for use.

Although Sony has posted a blog post saying that it is not yet sure what has caused the outage, speculation is already rife that Anonymous is behind it.

The anonymous collective is the group behind the website attacks in support of Wikileaks some weeks ago, and recently named Sony as its next target.

Dramatic

Sony’s European blog manager, James Gallagher, didn’t rule out the possibility of outside interference, writing: “Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behaviour by an outside party.

“If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service.”

Sony invoked Anonymous’ ire by legally pursuing PS3 hacker George Hotz and “violat

Review: Sony KDL-32EX723

but at last the first of Sony’s eagerly anticipated 2011 Bravia TVs is here, and comes internet, 3D and full HD-ready.

The 32-inch KDL-32EX723 is a great starting point for getting a handle on how Sony’s 2011 TV range might shape up in the weeks and months to come, since it sits more or less in the middle in terms of cost. Priced at

LG Optimus 3D pushed back until June?

The LG Optimus 3D UK release date has been newly touted as 6 June by online retailer Clove.

That’s a whole lot later than other retailers Play.com and Expansys, which have the three dimensional handset listed for release next week, on 25 April.

The first 3D-toting handset, first unveiled at this year’s Mobile World Congress, will be retailing for around

The iPhone tracking fiasco and what you can do about it

By now you’ve no doubt heard about a certain iOS database file called consolidated.db. It made quite a splash yesterday when a pair of researchers, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, from O’Reilly Media announced the “iPhone tracking software” the duo had “discovered hidden on the phones.” Here’s the problem: they didn’t discover it, at least not originally. The file, known to hold large amounts of geolocation data collected from WiFi access points and cell-towers, has been probed by forensic experts ever since the retail launch of the iPhone 4 back in June of 2010. Hell, Sean Morrissey and Alex Levinson published a physical book on the topic back in December 2010, entire excerpts of which can easily be found on Google. So either the team from O’Reilly is being disingenuous with its claims or it’s being lazy.

Regardless, the story laid dormant for months until the O’Reilly team was able to visualize the data in a very personal way. Running the team’s open-source iPhoneTracker software to see the detailed locations of our worldly travels is absolutely fascinating. Imagining the same data file in the hands of a stalker, misguided detective, or a jealous lover is downright creepy.

But how is it possible that an issue like this has avoided the tech community at large for more than a year? And more importantly, what can you do about it? Read on to find out.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc crowned best mobile phone

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has shown itself to be the phone that finally knocks the HTC Desire off the perch of best mobile phone in the world.

TechRadar’s ranking of the 20 best handsets is our definitive list, helping you work out which phone to pick up, and has had millions of views since its launch last year.

The HTC Desire has sat proudly atop that list since its launch last year, but now there’s a new smartphone cowboy on the scene in the shape of the Xperia Arc.

It was an nigh-on impossible task to choose a winner, with all of the top 20 proving to be quality smartphones – and the HTC Desire S and Desire staging the mobile version of a Greek tragedy at numbers two and three below the Xperia Arc.

Still all about HTC

HTC was the best represented on the list, nabbing six of the 20 slots, with Samsung stealing four (with the Galaxy S proving its longevity at number five).

INQ was a new entry with the Cloud Touch, although the Orange San Francisco nabbed the title of ‘best budget phone’ at number nine.

Predictably, Android was the dominant OS with 16 of the entries running the Google OS – but it’s good to see Bada, BlackBerry OS and Symbian in the mix too.

We’re still waiting to see where the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the HTC Sensation land in our ranking – but right now it’s Sony Ericsson proving that it’s finally moving in the right direction with the gorgeous Xperia Arc sitting pretty at number one.

EFF Calls Google Out Over Lack of Transparency, Draconian Approach to Android Market

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has taken to their blog to voice their displeasure with Google's recent pulling of Grooveshark from the Android Market.  As they see it, Google is headed in a completely different direction from the open and transparent Utopia promised back in 2007.  The EFF speculates as to why Google might have pulled the music application, positing that it could be copyright law-related or, worse, a potential competitor to their rumored Google Music service.  Given that Grooveshark still doesn't know exactly what they did to get the boot, they could not retool the application.  Meanwhile, Grooveshark has begun offering the music app directly from their website, away from the Android Market's policies.

Is the EFF correct in calling Google heavy handed or Draconian? It's hard to say exactly.  We're still only a couple of years into the whole app distribution game and with few players involved, things are constantly in flux.  We're in a very litigious time with large companies who can be held accountable or punished with financial penalties that reach millions or billions.  Perhaps Google is only trying to shore things up a bit and protect themselves from a major lawsuit.  On the other hand, maybe they see the benefit in exercising more control.

How do you feel about Google and the Android Market policies? As a customer, do you find them fair?  How about you developers reading this?

bobomb

Um, is the EFF all over Apple's ass regarding their app store practictes? Cause, uh... Google is light years better than Apple in that regard. Now if Google has done something wrong, then they need to be called out, but I would think the Grooveshark thing seems like a clear case of trying to get the RIAA to STFU.

Yes, they're all over Apple, too: http://www.eff.org/search?text

Update on Nexus One Gingerbread Call Delay Issue

Recently we reported about an issue that people who own Nexus One's and have upgraded to "Gingerbread" have been having with a 3 second or so delay in hearing or being heard when answering calls on their device.  People have been posting their issues in the Gingerbread issue tracker, but not getting much help.

Today, Google's Dan Morrill weighed in and said that since the issue is device specific, it should be pursued in the Google Mobile Help Forum.  Certainly not what you were hoping to hear from Google first thing, as it feels like the issue is being shunted to a different department.

If you are having the issue, make sure to put your feedback in the Forum using the link above.  Frustrated yet?

http://twitter.com/GeathanGeathan A.

Im pretty upset of the way Dan closed the issue after amounted over 200 new users when it was first reported here.

http://twitter.com/chuckfalzoneChuck Falzone

It's frustrating but understandable: if they work specifically on the device-independent parts of Android, it makes sense that they wouldn't be able to help with an issue that is device-dependent.

http://twitter.com/benmarvinbenmarvin

I've actually been having the same issue on my G2 running CM7. I don't use the phone much, so it doesn't bother me.

Xoom Headed to U.S. Cellular?

The Xoom is the Android tablet right now, at least in terms of mass media and acceptance. Of course, it's the only Honeycomb tablet that's actually on the market at the moment, but it still has a firm foot in the Android tablet game. According to a leaked screenshot obtained by AndroidCentral, U.S. Cellular will be carrying the 10.1-inch, dual-core processor tablet sometime in the second quarter. No word on whether it will utilize their cellular network, like the Verizon Xoom, or if it'll be a MiFi device, following the Cellular South version. It's also worth noting that there's a Sprint Xoom floating around out there, but nothing's been confirmed yet.

We'll try to do more digging and find some answers to these questions, but in the meantime, one can only wonder what the price tag will be on the U.S. Cellular Xoom. Thoughts? Are any of our readers, that are currently using U.S. Cellular, planning to buy the Xoom when it drops? Sound off in the comments below!

Sony Ericsson Reports Q1 Results, Looks to New Xperia Handsets for Rebound

Sony Ericsson's first quarter results are in and they appear to be a mixed bag for the conglomerate.  With them putting more focus on smart phones and less on feature phones, overall sales have dropped (-19%) a bit.  With a 23% decrease as compared to same time last year, shipments were also down at 8.1 million units.  Things look to pick up with the introduction of a new line of Xperia devices as the PLAY and other models begin hitting various carriers around the globe.  It will be interesting to see what kind of an impact the Japan earthquake has on supply and distribution as Sony Ericsson takes aim for the top Android smart phone vendor in the world.

Gingerbread for European Galaxy S Gets Halted

Word came down over the weekend that Vodafone customers were seeing a Gingerbread update for their Samsung Galaxy S handsets.  Awesome, right?  Not so fast.  Today we've learned that someone has stopped the update dead in its tracks.  According to the carrier, Google is responsible for killing off the 2.3 rollout.  It is said that the problem behind the update is not universal and that Vodafone phones are unaffected.  Engadget feels this is yet another bump in the Samsung road and we see no reason to disagree.  Hopefully the issue gets resolved in short order and the updates get back on track.http://www.topandroidapps.co.uknick

Big Apps List: Pinball

While nothing really compares to dropping a quarter in a real Black Knight 2000 or The Addams Family machine, those tables are becoming hard to find. What options do pinball freaks have on Android? Some good ones, thankfully. Check 'em out:

Pinball Ride is currently the best of the bunch. Though it features only one table, it just gets everything right. Gameplay and physics let you almost forget you're playing on a phone. The graphics and camera angles, especially in flipper view, are top notch and it has the kind of "story line" you see in classic '90s pinball machines. Add nice sound effects and haptics and it simply feels the most like playing real pinball. Check it out:

Report Finds Android Could Eclipse iOS Install Base Within a Year

We've seen our fair share of reports and studies over the last year which show Android's market share on the rise.  With each quarter that passes another survey comes out telling us that our favorite platform is doing better than the competition.  At some point all this Android momentum has to catch up and push the install base beyond Apple, right?  According to Horace Dediu of asymco, this could happen within a year.

Using data that starts from the launch of both Android and iOS platforms, Dediu plotted the known activations across each quarter.  Four years in, Apple has around 191 million cumulative users whereas Android is at 83 million after 31 months.  Factoring in the impressive growth rate and doing a bit of math, the Android install base should overtake Apple at some point in the next twelve months.

To be fair here, this takes everything as it is today and assumes nothing changes.  We have no idea what either company or platform will be doing six months from now, nor what sort of options are available to customers.

One should be careful about drawing conclusions that this implies effective competition... iOS is growing at at least 100%/yr and Android’s second year was 65x bigger than its first. iOS growth is limited by the ramp rates of a limited portfolio of products. Android growth is limited by how quickly vendors can bring out products. Neither platform is demand constrained and hence they are competing for share of growth not for share of a fixed pie.

Make free Skype-to-Skype calls and call phones at Skype’s great rates over Wi-Fi or 3G

Skype users rejoice!  Per Skype's own security blog the privacy vulnerability for Android has been fixed.  But even more importantly, Skype has now added calling over 3G to the pure Skype app versus Verizon's exclusive Skype Mobile.  So even though the minutes will still tick away on your precious monthly plan, at least you can make/take calls without getting that pesky "must turn WiFi off" notification.  The Skype update is in the Android Market now.http://muddypa.wsnportelli

The White House: Now on Android

Apparently somebody got the hint when President Obama recently complained about the lack of "really cool phones and stuff" at the White House. If they can't get really cool phones in the White House, at least they were able to bring the White House to really cool phones.

Joining the previously released iOS app, the White House has released an Android app that allows political junkies to get alerts, watch the President speak live, view photos and videos, and read up on news.

Now, with the White House's app joining Sunlight Labs' unofficial-but-awesome Congress app, we've got the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government covered. The Supreme Court has got to be feeling the pressure, no?

T-Mobile G-Slate officially Arrives on April 20th at $529.99

As the rumor previously suggested LG G-Slate (Optimus Pad) to drop in T-Mobile stores on April 20th, T-mobile blog now officially confirmed the date. The 3D G-Slate, will be released nationwide April 20, 2011 and offered for $529.99 with a two year contract, for current T-Mobile customers after a $100 mail-in rebate. Key features of T-Mobile G-Slate formerly known as LG Optimus Pad 3D:

SwiftKey Testing New Keyboard with Personalization Features

Swiftkey has begun testing a new version of their popular keyboard replacement application which is said to feature personalization options.  According to our source, the customization centers around how the app plays with Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter data.  As to how exactly this works remains a little cloudy but we're interested in hearing more.  Other details in the latest Swiftkey update are said to focus on improving response times, battery optimization, and a bump in the prediction algorithm.  As soon as we can get our hands on more details we'll pass them along!
